Friday Noir: Scarface

Before Al Pacino starred in the famed remake of this 1932 noir classic, Howard Hawks’ gangster classic Scarface shocked audiences with its unprecedented violence. The screenplay was penned by Ben Hecht, a Chicago newspaperman, and apparently Capone’s thugs tried to squash the project until Hecht convinced them that the movie wasn’t based on Capone. Classic crime cinema.
