After decades of relative obscurity, the Manson Family is back in the news.
In a letter to the U.S. Justice Department, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck has requested access to eight hours of recorded conversations between Manson Family member Charles “Tex” Watson and his 1970s-era lawyer Bill Boyd, now deceased, based on information that the tapes could link the “family” to additional unsolved murders.
The recordings, which constitute privileged communication between attorney and client, were sold in 1976 to an author who wrote a tell-all book in 1978. Watson used the money to cover his defense fees.
